Simon Hatton Jazz Saxophone Bursary recipient Nic Scully debuted his career in music performance at age 13, as saxophonist for the big band funk group ‘All Stars Show Band’, with whom he performed at the Caloundra Music Festival. In the following years, Nic continued a dedicated pursuit of musical performance and the study of music theory, particularly in Jazz. After completing an Advanced Diploma of Music in school, he was offered candidacy at the Queensland Conservatorium at age 16.
After studying Jazz here for 3 years with the highly prestigious James Sandon, Nic continues his musical pursuits through the wider Brisbane Jazz community. Nic’s deeply thoughtful approach to melody and improvisation is rooted in that of Jazz giants such as Joe Lovano, Charlie Parker, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea and many more, who have inspired the playful interactivity and bold reflection of life expressed in his playing.
Between freelance gigs and study, Nic is pursuing his own love and expression of Jazz with the Nic Scully Quartet, in the interim to actualising his plans to travel to Tokyo Japan in 2028 and further immerse himself in the frontier of Jazz.
