Vices is a Gold Coast DJ and producer who has spent more than a decade turning an unnecessarily large knowledge of music into high-energy, sample-driven sets.
While most DJs can reel off a long list of names that shaped them, Vices has just one real influence from within the DJ world: Girl Talk. The cut-and-paste sampling, disregard for genre boundaries and ability to reshape familiar songs into something new became the blueprint for Vices’ own mashups, edits and fast-moving style. His sets jump between pop, disco, house, hip-hop, R&B, indie, rock and throwbacks, with genre treated more as a suggestion than a rule.
Vices has supported the likes of Dom Dolla, Wet Leg, Peking Duk, What So Not, Sneaky Sound System, Yolanda Be Cool, Matt Corby, Spacey Jane, Hockey Dad and Portugal. The Man, as well as performing at Splendour in the Grass.
Whether pulling apart a classic, dropping an unexpected combination or simply playing the right song at the right moment, Vices’ sets are built around timing, surprise and knowing what people want before they do.
